APC UPS vs. Generator with Automatic Transfer Switch: What a Power Reliability Specialist Actually Recommends in 2025

1. Runtime: Minutes vs. Hours

A 1500VA UPS is the most common starting point for a small network rack. The APC BX1500M UPS specifications show a unit that has enough capacity to handle typical IT loads, but runtime is always load-dependent. If you run a modest load through it, you might get 15 to 20 minutes. Load it closer to its rated limit, and that can drop to five minutes or less.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. Battery technology, remote monitoring, and software integration have all changed the way I size backup power. But some basics haven't changed: a protected environment is a chain, not a single product.

If you're starting from zero, buy an APC UPS first. Something like the BX1500M gives you enough protection for a small network rack. If your outages regularly run past the battery's runtime, then add a generator with automatic transfer switch. If you already have a generator, add or verify the ATS, and make sure a UPS sits between the generator and your sensitive loads. If you need power in a vehicle, a 1000 watt inverter for car can be useful, but it shouldn't be sold as a substitute for either.
