Wednesday, 4:12 p.m. My phone buzzed with a voicemail from a regular customer. "The APC UPS is dying! It won't stop beeping, and the network cabinet is going to shut down."

I've coordinated emergency power repairs for workshops and small factories for about six years. I've lost count of the same-day calls—somewhere north of forty last year alone. I plugged a multimeter into the same circuit. The voltage at the outlet was 122V with everything off. Then the compressor kicked on. The reading dropped to 104V. The UPS saw that sag and did exactly what it was designed to do: it switched to battery to protect the load.

The UPS wasn't the problem. The problem was upstream, in the electric panel.

The Real Culprit: A Bad Breaker

The panel was a standard residential-style load center, but it fed a small commercial shop. The 20A breaker feeding that circuit had been warm to the touch. After I pulled the cover with the owner watching, we found heat damage around the breaker terminal. Loose connections in an electric panel don't always trip immediately—they cause voltage drops under load first. Voltage drops confuse UPS units.

Both are 1500VA / 900W line-interactive, pure sine wave UPS units. The SMT1500C has the local LCD and the usual USB/serial connectivity. The SMT1500IC adds SmartConnect remote monitoring—or at least the network/wireless monitoring option that lets you check status without walking to the equipment room.

For a small workshop, the SMT1500C is honestly enough. The IC version makes more sense if you need e-mail alerts or remote management. My field review of both: reliable, the LCD is handy, and neither one is a substitute for fixing a bad breaker or a loose connection upstream.

The Stihl MS290 Spark Plug Side Quest

While the owner and I were waiting for the panel cover to go back on, he asked about a chainsaw that was running rough. "Would a Stihl MS290 spark plug cause that?"
