A continuous beep — not the occasional chirp every few seconds, but a steady alarm — is your UPS trying to tell you something specific. The four causes I've seen in the field:

  • Input power is missing or unstable. The UPS switched to battery and is draining itself, beeping for attention. Check whether the outlet is actually delivering power.
  • Battery is disconnected or reversed. This is especially common after a battery replacement. The UPS can't charge, so it alarms.
  • The battery is dead or can't hold a charge. The UPS senses the battery can't support the load, beeps, and often shuts down shortly after.
  • Overload. More load connected than the UPS rating allows. The beeping is the UPS saying "I can't do this."

A septic pump control panel runs a motor, and motors have startup surge, often three to five times their running current. A UPS's VA rating assumes a certain kind of load. How do I hook up a battery charger to a UPS battery?

There are exactly two good reasons to hook an external battery charger to a UPS battery: you're pre-charging a new pack before installation, or the UPS's internal charging circuit is dead. I've done both. One of them cost me $214 for no reason.

In 2023, I tried to save about $40 by charging a 12V battery from a 48V Smart-UPS 3000XL string with a car charger instead of buying a proper AGM-compatible charger. The battery charged fine. But when I reconnected everything, the UPS refused to power on and displayed an f02 fault code. It took a call to support to confirm that the imbalanced string had confused the charger circuit.   • Multimeter first, charger second. A 12V battery resting below 10V is not "low." It's dead. Stop buying chargers to revive batteries that can't hold voltage.

How often should I replace my APC UPS battery anyway?
